Truck EGR & DPF Repair
Today’s modern trucks are designed with environmental consciousness in mind, an especially important idea given the amount of diesel exhaust fumes even modern engines put out.

What is the EGR system?
The EGR system is an emissions control system that reduces the number of harmful pollutants released into the atmosphere. It works by recirculating a portion of the exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber, where it mixes with the incoming air and fuel. This helps to lower the temperature of the combustion process and reduce the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are major contributors to air pollution.
The EGR system consists of an EGR valve, a pipe that carries the exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold, and a control module that regulates the flow of gas. The valve is usually located on the intake manifold and is controlled by the engine’s computer system. When the valve opens, it allows a small amount of exhaust gas to flow back into the combustion chamber.
How does the DPF work?
The DPF, or diesel particulate filter, is a device that captures and removes soot and other diesel particulates from the exhaust gas. These particulates are a byproduct of the combustion process and can contribute to air pollution if not properly filtered.
The DPF is made up of a ceramic or metallic substrate with a large surface area that is coated with a catalyst, such as platinum. As the exhaust gas passes through the filter, the catalyst helps to break down the soot and other particulates into smaller, less harmful molecules that can be safely released into the atmosphere.
Signs of Trouble To Look Out For
Although you may not keep your truck or fleet vehicle’s DPF and EGR system in mind when it comes to issues, there are some signs that they may need to be serviced, including:
- Decreased fuel efficiency: If the EGR valve becomes stuck open or the DPF becomes clogged, it can restrict the flow of exhaust gas and reduce the engine’s efficiency. This can result in decreased fuel economy and increased fuel consumption.
- Contamination: If the EGR system is not functioning properly, it can allow contaminated exhaust gas to enter the combustion chamber, which can lead to engine damage and decreased performance.
- Forced regeneration: Most modern diesel engines have a system that can automatically clean the DPF by burning off the accumulated soot. This process, known as forced regeneration, can occur when the filter becomes too clogged and needs to be cleaned. If your truck is experiencing frequently forced regeneration, it may be time to have the DPF serviced.
- Check engine light: If the EGR system or DPF is not functioning properly, it can trigger the check engine light on the dashboard. If this happens, it’s important to have the issue diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible.
